It’s very rare that I get an exclusive on anything, especially in the world of social media where nothing is private or unique any more. But Seth MacFarlane recently gave me this gift on the red carpet during the EW party at Comic-Con.  I was the only media outlet he stopped to talk to about The Orville. Take that E! News!

In all fairness, he only stopped because he remembered me from his show. I have a small part on an upcoming episode of The Orville and he was gracious enough not to tell me to eff off when I asked to interview him.  I don’t know if he’s not a fan of red carpet interviews or if he just wanted to get to the party, but he didn’t stop and talk to anyone else. Thus, exclusive.

I kept the interview short because he was already being so nice and I didn’t want to push my luck. After all, I would like to work with him again one day. I asked him about the response to the show so far and what he things fans will be surprised with the most. He told me the fans will be surprised with how layered The Orville is and not just a broad comedy. Having read one of his scripts I can absolutely tell you that’s true.  His writing has always had depth and layers and I think fans will appreciate that here.

The Orville is set 400 years in the future with a rag tag group of space explorers on board the USS Orville. Seth plays Ed Mercer the captain of the USS Orville. He is also the creator and Executive Producer of the show along with Brannon Braga (Star Trek). There are already a lot of similarities being drawn between Star Trek and The Orville which is understandable since it’s a space exploration show.  However based on what I’ve read and seen I think fans will be surprised at how much the show tackles workplace drama, politics and hot button topics.

I for one am already marking it down in my calendar to watch because I love space exploration centric shows and I think Seth is a genius writer. With that combination, how can it not be out of this world?

The Orville airs Sept. 10th on Fox. Check out my interview below with Seth while he humbly tries to downplay the excitement of this show. Then everyone tweet at him to have me back on for another episode!
