Channing and I just got back from an epic, frostbitten tour of New York where we saw The Kid Who Would Be King. It was a 3-day adventure that included ice skating, Times Square, and a lot of walking. The perfect girls weekend!
If you haven’t seen the trailer for The Kid Who Would Be King let me fill you in. It’s a modern day retelling of the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. A kid named Alex finds the Sword in the Stone and has to choose to follow his destiny, or let the world succumb to the evils of the enchantress, Morgana. Thankfully, he chooses to take up the sword, Exaclibur, and bring his eneminies together to save the world.
It’s a very entertaining movie After the screening, we were taken to nearby Xavier High School where we sat down with some of the cast and the director.
Before we got to the interviews, Channing was sent to knight school with some knights from Medievel Times. She wasn’t really sure what to do with her sword but I think she had fun trying to figure it out.
Then we were taken to interview rooms where we met, wait for it, Sir Patrick Stewart! I have been a fan of his since I was 14 years old. I grew up on Star Trek: The Next Generation and am an open and proud Trekkie.
But for this meeting, I kept my Trek questions at bay and asked him about playing legendary magician Merlin for The Kid Who Would Be King. He told me he loves watching magic, but doesn’t have a desire to do it for himself.
The star of the film is Louis Ashbourne Serkis. He is so talented for such a young man! He’s the son of character actor Andy Serkis who played Gollum in The Lord of the Rings.
Watch my interview to hear what Louis, his co-star Rhianna Dorris and Patrick Stewart have to say about their work in The Kid Who Would Be King and what they hope kids will enjoy about it. You can also watch the Facebook live interview I did with director Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) about what 80’s movies inspired him to write and direct this film.
