Rita Sherrow from my hometown newspaper wrote a wonderful piece about my appearance on Lopez on TV Land and why I started my podcast. It’s a great insight into why I do what I love. You can read the article here. Thanks Rita!
TVtype: Tulsa native Heather Brooker makes an appearance on TVLand’s ‘Lopez’
The Tulsa native, who lives in Glendale, California, plays very much against type in Wednesday’s episode of the new “Lopez” comedy on TV Land, cable 1062. She’s also a wife, mom to an energetic 3-year-old, an Emmy award-winning writer and host of the comedic podcast Motherhood in Hollywood.
Whether you know it, you’ve seen the Metro Christian Academy graduate on a variety of TV shows — “Grey’s Anatomy,” “The Mindy Project,” “The Office,” “Fresh Off the Boat” and the spoof “Real Husbands of Hollywood” with Kevin Hart.
The former KOTV reporter said her role on “Lopez,” which airs at 9 p.m. Wednesday on TV Land, cable 1062, was something she had never done before.
“I’m a little nervous about how it will come off,” said Brooker, who is playing a “kind of a love interest” in the episode.
“It was a lot of fun. I am always nervous when I work with a big comedic star or comic legend, and George Lopez falls in that category. He was so nice, so professional and really encouraging to me.”
She’s also busy writing for her website motherhoodinhollywood.com and podcast she started because she found being an actor a lonely business.
“Acting, by nature, is freelance, so there is no office to go to every day to get to know co-workers,” said Brooker, who also writes part time for a TV station. “We only see each other sporadically. And it’s so hard to make those connections, especially for parents and moms, and meet others in the same situation who are an actor, like me, following your dreams. “
Brooker, who still keeps her phone with an 918 area code and whose mother, Barbara Glenn, lives in Tulsa, said she needed something creative to do and was surprised how it suddenly took off. Her podcast can be subscribed to on iTunes, she added.
As a former reporter, she said she still likes to talk and to interview people, so a podcast was a great option. Among the guests have been actors Allison Holker from “Dancing With the Stars,” reality star Audrina Patridge, designer Betsey Johnson, actor Beverly Mitchell from “7th Heaven” and more.
“They are just great moms and wonderful guests who talk about their experience parenting in Hollywood,” said Brooker, who met her husband, Stillwater native Chris Brooker, at Oklahoma State University in the journalism department. They are getting ready to celebrate their 15th wedding anniversary. A former radio broadcaster, he is a finance manager with Disney.
Brooker, who also has family in Sand Springs, said she is starting to do standup comedy and is a “big believer in trying new things and pushing your boundaries.”
“My podcast is very different,” she said. “I’m definitely pushing the envelope on a lot of things so it’s kind of blue, and there’s a little swearing. But that’s who I am.
“I am not a perfect mom, but I play one on TV.”
