My guest this week is power podcaster Travis McElroy! If you’re a fan of podcasts, then you have no doubt listened to one of his shows at one time or another. He is what I would call a celebrity in the podcasting world and his fame happened almost by accident.
He has eight (1 annually) to choose from, all of which are regularly near the top of the iTunes charts. He has hoisted an empire on his mic and says he’s got even bigger plans down the road.
Travis is the middle of three brothers who share hosting duties on their flagship show, My Brother, My Brother and Me.
These funny brothers from West Virginia started their show 6 years ago and admittedly had no idea what they were doing. But whatever it was they were dishing out, listeners have been scooping up in droves.
Now, the McElroy boys have built careers around podcasting and are working on a TV show about their lives. #LifeGoals
Travis started his career in the theater and explains how podcasts came calling at just the right time. Since then he has immersed himself in that world, moving to LA to shake hands with comedians, actors, writers and fellow podcasters. Once he started networking, he also started realizing there were more and more opportunities to create shows.
He added Trends Like These, Can I Pet Your Dog, Interrobang, Adventure Zone, Shmanners, and my personal favorite Bunker Buddies to his list of podcasts. It’s my fave because it’s co-hosted by my super talented sister from another mister, Andie Bolt.
I’m also mildly obsessed with the impending apocalypse. It’s coming! You better get prepared!
Honestly, all of his shows are great. There is real production value behind them which is something Travis says is very important to him.
One bonus side effect of creating great content, is he now makes a living as a podcaster. Did you even know that was a possibility? My guess is people are becoming wise to it because thousands of new podcasts are uploaded to iTunes and other players each week.
As a relatively new podcaster, I wanted to know everything inside his head so I could use it to continue my goal of world domination.
When I realized there wasn’t enough time for that, I settled on where he thinks the business of podcasting is heading. Will we reach a saturation point? Will listeners eventually start tuning out and look for the next big trend? Right now the number of people listening to podcasts is on the rise and I love what Travis says he thinks will happen next.
You didn’t think I was going to spill it all here did you? Consider yourself teased!
I feel so lucky that Travis spent some time sharing his expertise with me, especially because he’s moving back to West Virginia soon. He and his wife Teresa are expecting their first child and I have a feeling his mind is already spinning with ideas for a new show. If he does do a parenting podcast he better have me on as a guest!
You can find out more about Travis and his shows on his website, follow him on Twitter @TravisMcElroy, Facebook, and keep up with his latest episodes on the Maximum Fun Network.
Good luck and congratulations on the baby, Travis!
