Toy Story was the first Pixar movie ever made. It opened in 1995 and completely changed the way animated stories are told and our expectations of animated films. Cut to 23 years later and Walt Disney World is about to open a new attraction at Hollywood Studios based on that film. And after getting a sneak peek I have no doubt it will take visitors to infinity…and beyond.
I recently interviewed the Walt Disney Imagineering Art Director for Toy Story Land, Ryan Wineinger live on Facebook during the #DisneySMMC. We had a great chat about what visitors can expect to see at the park and the amount of detail and care that went into planning this sweet new attraction.
Pixar fans get ready! It’s going to be as adorable as you imagine it will be. It opens on June 30th. When you get to Hollywood Studios you’ll go all the way through the park to find the entrance. It’s located between Pixar Place and Walt Disney Presents.
The idea behind Toy Story Land is that Andy has spread out all of his toys and parkgoers will become “honorary toys” when they enter the park. The Walt Disney Imagineers specifically designed the park not to feel like an extension of the movies, but feel more like you are a part of the toy world.
Extra scoop: Ryan also tells me visitors will also see a lot of their favorite toys from their childhood inside Toy Story Land, not just toys from the films. They can interact with them, touch them and take pictures as well so be on the lookout for those treasures!
Toy Story Land Highlights
1. Slinky Dog Dash
This rollercoaster is designed to look like Slinky Dog. It’s cars mimic the rings in Slinky Dog’s body. The entire family will be able to ride as it curves, dips and drops around Toy Story Land.
2. Woody Statue
It will be hard to miss but visitors will be greeted by a 20-foot-tall statue of Wood when they enter the park. Obviously this is a must have photo spot.
3. Alien Swirling Saucers
Riders will be placed in rocket ships being pulled — and swirled around — by aliens in space ships. Just like in the film, the little green guys seek to be chosen by the Claw from above.
4. Woody’s Lunch Box
A cowboy-style diner that’s sure to match our favorite hero’s childlike spirit. It’s designed to look like a lunchbox completely with a thermos, green army men and our favorite Babybel cheese. You can stop in here for every meal of the day or just a quick snack.
5. Toy Story Mania
I’m told the ride will mostly be the same, but the entrance will get an updated look. Climb aboard an early 20th-century-inspired Carnival Ride Tram and grab your spring-action shooter. With 3D glasses on, glide into the Toy Story Midway Games Play Set and take aim at stationary and moving 3D objects in a variety of fast-paced games.
