Did your wedding day go off without a hitch? Mine did not. Oh the stories I could tell….

The Brookers were married May 5th, 2001 with this atrocity of a wedding cake.

Let’s start with my wedding cake fail. I’ve been reminiscing about that day as I plan for our upcoming 20th anniversary and came across this picture and had to laugh. This was not the wedding cake of my dreams. And it was just one of the many awkward things that happened on my big day that were beyond my control.

Story time. On my wedding day, I was getting my hair done with my bridesmaids when I got a call from the bakery. Apparently the night before, someone had eaten all the white chocolate curls that were made for my wedding cake. They didn’t know it was for my cake and just thought it was a snack or something. And after months of making my own decorations by hand, saving up to pay for it all, and planning everything to a T, some numb nut ate part of my wedding cake. So, natch, I started crying. And one of my bridesmaids jumped into action and used her alleged “mafia ties” to set it straight. Gotta love a good friend who has your back! So she had her brother go to the bakery and muscle a cake out of them. I swear I’m not making this up.

They called me back and promised to have a cake delivered and this is what showed up. For reference, he picture below is what it was supposed to look like. Now you know why Chris and I were not thrilled to cut this or take photos with it. At the time I remember being so embarrassed as people kept saying “What an interesting cake!” I was mortified. But I didn’t let it ruin my special day. I still married the man of my dreams and the cake tasted good so there’s that.

This is a similar photo that shows what the Brooker wedding cake was supposed to look like.

I can look back and laugh now because really, it’s so ridiculous. I’m planning a much smaller version of our wedding next week and it’s so much different now. I’m not stressed. I’m not worried if something goes wrong. I did not order a cake. I wish I could go back and tell that young bride that this mafia cake would be just one of many wonderfully ridiculous, unexpected, embarrassing, funny things that would happen in her life. And they would all happen with Chris Brooker by her side. Who needs perfection when you can have a great story?
