I love this superhero renaissance we are in right now.
I mean really, with Marvel knocking it out of the park with just about everything they produce and DC producing…well, anything, it really is a great time to be alive if you’re a comic book lover and/or fan of everything super heroic. However, long before Iron Man or Wonder Woman hit the silver screen, there was a super hero movie that I’ve always considered to be one of the best. It was a little Pixar film called The Incredibles. It came out in the backend of 2004 and I think I’ve probably watched it at least twice a year every year since.
Flash forward almost 14 years later. We finally have sequel! I’ve been looking forward to this movie ever since the news of its development broke back in 2014. Of any movie deserving of a sequel, I’ve always thought The Incredibles was the most worthy. I mean how could you not wonder what happened next when the Parr family (fully masked!) prepares to battle The Underminer (voiced by John Ratzenberger) at the end of the first one?
Well, we finally find out what happens next, and so much more. I’m not going to get too spoilery here, but basically, Incredibles 2 picks up right after the events of the first one. No time is lost and you are immediately dropped back into this world of the Parrs and how they cope with being Supers in a Super-unfriendly world.
If you’ve seen the trailers, you know that the plot is somewhat similar to the first movie on that now it is Elastigirl who goes off to fight crime, leaving Mr. Incredible at home to take care of the family. Really though, the similarities end there as we see new plot twists, meet new villains AND new heroes (and frankly, I’d like to see a spinoff with some of these new heroes). I loved seeing the beleaguered, envious Mr. Incredible watch his wife claim all the super accolades while he juggles the perils of being a house husband. Add to that a baby whose powers are just beginning to develop, and you’ve got a fresh take on “Mr. Mom” that works a lot better than it should.
Also, the fight scene with Jack-Jack and his nemesis is one of the best moments in the movie. Everybody is back for this one. Brad Bird is back in the writer/director chair, which means the look and tone of the movie is exactly as it should be. And, of course, more Edna Mode. More Frozone. More everything!
The action is great, of course, but more than anything, I loved seeing this movie about a family coming together and facing whatever it is that is thrown at them – together. The underlying theme (much like in the first movie) is all about family and protecting each other, whether it’s from super villains or super teenage crushes.
All in all, Incredibles 2 was a great time in the theater. Full of action, humor and heart, this movie should be on everyone’s list of Summer “must-sees”, even if you don’t love comic books. Pixars’ Incredibles 2 opens nationwide on June 15th and stars Craig T. Nelson, Helen Hunt, Sarah Vowell, Huckleberry Milner and Samuel L. Jackson.
