I’ve watched Katrina Law for years on the hit CW show “Arrow” and now I can’t believe she’s on my podcast. I’m getting total cool wife points on this one! She played Nyssa al Ghul, a former high ranking member of The League of Assassins.
My deep track nerds will appreciate just how cool this is. Internationally, she is also well known for starring as Mira on the critically acclaimed STARZ series “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” and “Spartacus: Vengeance.”
Fast forward a few years and Katrina just joined season 10 of “Hawaii 5-0” and is already kicking butt on, and off screen. I was so thrilled to talk to her while she was on a break from filming in Hawaii.
Not only is she a badass in her new role as Quinn Liu, but she’s also mom to an almost one-year-old baby girl named Kinley. She took a break from filming to chat with me about the challenges and joys of being a new mom while stepping into a new role on a popular show. “Hawaii 5-0” has been on for 10 seasons and has a well established fanbase. For some actors that would be intimidating. But Katrina says she’s grateful for the opportunity and jumped right in.
While she has a history of playing tough characters with a mastery of fight scenes, she tells me she didn’t start off wanting to be an action star. It’s something that she fell into and as it turns out, she’s really great at it. Watching her in action makes me think I should try harder next time I’m at the gym.
Another role she says she never envisioned for herself is the role of mom. Like me, she wasn’t sure she wanted to have kids. So she waited until she felt the time was right and as it turns out, she’s really great at that too. We talked about how she manages her day-to-day routine with being on set for long hours and missing her daughter. Like most moms, actors miss their kids when they’re at work. It’s not just fun and games while you’re on set. It’s a job. And it’s nice to have family to go home to. She says her parents and husband Keith Andreen have been integral to her support system so she can work while they take care of her daughter. BTW, while researching this post I found out that Keith is also from Tulsa! Yay! His Instagram is also amazing so you should check that out.
And while you’re at it, check out this episode! I loved Katrina’s honest and sense of humor about married life, motherhood and being a working actor in Hollywood. You can follow her adventures on Instagram @KatrinaLaw and watch for her in “Hawaii 5-0” on CBS.
